How to Easily Teach the Best Guided Math Lessons

If you are using or considering Guided Math for your classroom, this post is for you! These differentiated lessons are designed for small-group instruction while your other students engage in independently guided math activities. Aligned to CCSS and the Ontario Math Curriculum.

I launched my Guided Math centers back in October of 2014 and since then have connected with hundreds of teachers who have used these resources in their classrooms.

Guided Math Centers Bundle for Grades 2 and 3

For those of you who haven’t tried these out, my centers work on this acronym:

The Teacher’s Choice, or Teacher Time, is a piece that I’ve thought a lot about since that time. I wanted to provide the lessons to go with the independent student centers, but I knew they needed to be above and beyond what I’ve seen offered online. I didn’t want a bunch of surface-scratching lessons that only met the needs of the students “in the middle,” so I worked for hours upon hours to create something different.

I’m very proud to share my Differentiated Lessons for Guided Math!

Read on for all the details of what is included, or check out the video at the end of this post!

Differentiated Lessons

In each package, I created differentiated lessons aligned with both CCSS standards and Ontario Mathematics Curriculum expectations. Each topic has three lessons at a low, mid, and high level of ability. Every lesson is two pages long and includes a complete hyperlinked materials list, teaching instructions, curriculum connections, modifications, and next steps. (You can see all the standards and expectations addressed in the product previews on Teachers Pay Teachers.)

Observation/Assessment Tracking Forms

Assessment during small group lessons needs to be quick and easy. These groups don’t last long, and you need to make the most of your time.

I created observation/assessment forms for each lesson that can easily be printed on regular paper, or… get this… on sticky notes!! I love printing on sticky notes. I even provided a way for you to organize those (more on that in a minute!).

The forms all have “look-fors” related to the lesson you’ve just taught, are tagged with the standards/expectations of the lesson, and have space for you to make some notes or document the next steps for each student.

Student Exit Slips

There are many lessons included in each package, and each includes either an activity for you to observe students engaging with or it includes student exit slips.

Also, the exit slips, set up for easy printing on sticky notes, are a quick way for you to get a snapshot of student learning.

BTW… I’ve also included an editable exit slip template so you can further differentiate to meet the needs of your students!

Activity Masters

For some lessons, observing students during a hands-on activity better assesses their understanding. I’ve provided all the activity masters, games, puzzles, and worksheets you’ll need during the lessons.

Printable Manipulatives

Let’s face it: Not all classrooms are fully stocked with base ten blocks and plastic money. I’ve provided a printable version if you need a math tool that may not be in your classroom.

Teacher Tracking Sheets

Tracking all the data you collect is super-easy with the tracking options I’ve provided: included are tracking sheets by lesson level or by student. I also created collector sheets for those observation/activity forms that I mentioned already and for the student exit slips, so you can tuck those safely into your Guided Math Teacher Binder for future reference.

Bonus Activities

While the other students in your class are using my Guided Math centers while all this small-group teaching is going on, I know that sometimes you just need a little something extra. Packages contain a set of bonus activity centers (or two!) not included in any of my Guided Math center sets.

😊 Take a look at an overview of the entire package in this video:
